Explore Corpsmember Career Pathways

Our pathways are at the basis of career development and preparation at Civicorps. Corpsmembers are offered seven dynamic career pathways that prepare corpsmembers for various careers in conservation. Corpsmembers have the opportunity to explore the different pathways, all while earning certifications, valuable experience, and creating a competitive resume. Civicorps pathways are designed to provide comprehensive support and training, preparing corpmembers for family-sustaining careers.

Wildland Firefighter Pathway/Fuels Management/Trail Crew Member

This pathway emphasizes conservation and fuel reduction efforts, preparing corpsmembers for careers in wildland firefighting, fuel management, and trail maintenance. Civicorps’ Specialized Trails Crew helps develop critical fuel reduction skills essential for success in the field. Corpsmembers on this path often go on to work with the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) and California State Parks.

Park Attendant/Public Works Department

Corpsmembers following this pathway often pursue careers in parks. It emphasizes key skills such as plant identification, irrigation, and other areas specific to park maintenance. Those on this career path typically seek employment with the City of Oakland and the East Bay Regional Park District.

Class B Commercial Driver – emphasis WM

Corpsmembers on this pathway are part of the Civicorps Recycling Program, which prepares them to become eligible for apprenticeships with WM. Through Civicorps, corpsmembers can obtain their Class B Commercial Driver’s License and gain valuable experience in various roles, building a strong foundation for their careers. By the end of the program, corpsmembers are assigned a route for their Class B vehicle, providing them with the hands-on experience needed for a career at WM.

Crew Leader I – Crew Leader II

This pathway prepares corpsmembers for a career within Civicorps or other Conservation Corps. Corpsmembers can apply to the Crew Leader Academy, where they learn the principles and skills necessary for leading a crew. In CL academy, corpsmembers participate in staff safety training and extensive tool certification to become Crew Leaders.

Urban Farmer/Arborist Pathway

The Urban Farmer and Arborist pathway prepares corpsmembers for a range of careers in conservation. The certifications earned in this pathway equip corpsmembers with essential skills in chainsaw operation, chipper training, polesaw use, and managing invasive species. These skills are crucial for careers in urban farming or as an arborist.

Administration/Education/Environmental Services

This career pathway prepares corpsmembers for roles in education, administration, and other environmental services. Through Civicorps internships, corpsmembers gain valuable career training, including experience with Microsoft Suite. Other opportunities are available at EBMUD in customer service positions and with the City of Oakland and Waste Management.

Gardener/Grounds Maintenance Worker

This pathway emphasizes the skills needed for careers as gardeners and grounds maintenance workers. Corpsmembers acquire expertise in chainsaw operation, conservation awareness, and plant identificationā€”essential skills for these roles.

Potential career opportunities include positions such as Landscape Gardener with the City of Berkeley, Gardener with Alameda County, and Gardener with EBMUD.
