It’s official: Civicorps is coming to Contra Costa County to run a satellite Job Training Center. We will open our doors at our new Pittsburg site on Wednesday, October 12!
At its August 17 meeting, our Board of Directors approved a lease on a small warehouse in Pittsburg. This followed many months of discussion, research and community outreach to explore whether to expand our reach into East Contra Costa County. In the end, the decision to better service our growing target demographic of young people was unanimous
We have seen a 120% increase over the past 5 years of Corpsmembers making the trek to our Job Training Center in West Oakland from Pittsburg, Antioch, Bay Point and beyond. Our Environmental Management social enterprise will be the only workforce development program in East Contra Costa County that caters specifically to young adults ages 18-26 to prepare them for careers in climate resiliency and the environmental movement. Our existing partners — notably East Bay Regional Park District — have expressed the desire for an expansion of our services into Contra Costa County where there is a dearth of paid workforce development options.
Each year, Civicorps provides over 250 youth with comprehensive job training and paid work experience that serve as bridges to sustainable careers in land management, climate change mitigation, conservation and recycling. Young adults employed in Civicorps’ programs receive support services to help build self-reliance, resiliency, and start to chart a path to family sustaining careers. In partnership with Alameda County Office of Education’s Opportunity Academy, Civicorps also offers a high school education completion program for youth who enter the program without a diploma.
Civicorps’ Environmental Management social enterprise performs critical land management services including fire prevention, waterway protection, and trail maintenance projects throughout the East Bay. These projects provide needed protection for the Bay Area against pollution and climate change which have a negative impact on public health, wildlife and aquatic life, agriculture, and natural resources.
Civicorps’ Pittsburg Satellite is housed at 670A Garcia Avenue, a short walk from the Pittsburg Center BART station.
